Case Study

ACS Hillingdon

Our most recent and significant project at ACS Hillingdon involved the design for five sections of work totalling a construction value of approximately £5m. Works involved a rooftop extension to provide heavily serviced science lab facilities as well as refurbishment and main infrastructure upgrades to existing teaching accommodation within listed and non-listed areas of the school. Prior to completion of the extension all, existing services – cold water tanks, AC plant, and electrical distribution serving the main school – were replaced. Careful co-ordination, enabling / phasing strategies, and planning of work around the live environment were all addressed as part of the design development.

School Hall and Teaching Block, St Edwards School

QODA carried out the design of the mechanical, electrical, and sustainability strategy for this mix use development at St Edwards School. The facilities comprised of a 1000 seat hall, library, link areas, and teaching spaces. The project is located within an existing quad and required careful design to interface with the adjoining and closely located existing buildings. Innovative solutions were required to accommodate the significant mechanical services in the hall and natural ventilation was designed for the teaching areas and library.

Besse Building, St Edmund Hall

QODA have been appointed by St Edmund Hall to complete the transformational refurbishment and upgrade of the Besse building on the High street, Oxford. The existing Grade 2 Listed building occupies a prominent site in Oxford and consists of student accommodation over retail units The project is being completed to a tight budget and programme, and the QODA team have worked closely with the St Edmund Hall’s Estates team to ensure the key aspirations, including sustainability measures, for the project are achieved.

St Edmund Hall

QODA have been engaged as electrical services designers to replace the old existing LV Distribution system. The project includes developing a new distribution strategy for the site, detailing and co-ordinating builder’s works, production of drawings, specifications, and schedules. QODA are currently working on Phase 2 of the works which involves upgrading the electrical supplies to the kitchen.

Case Study

Balliol College

QODA were employed as part of a team to carry out the Mechanical & Electrical works involved in the refurbishment of the existing Porters Lodge. They wanted to increase security but also improve the flow of staff, students, and visitors to the College. As the Porters Lodge is one of the key focal points for alarm notifications and security of the College it was important that all functions were kept operational at all times. A temporary porters lodge had to be created in the courtyard and all existing functions moved temporarily across during the works and then reinstated on completion.

St Edburg’s Church of England Primary School

QODA were appointed for the Mechanical, Electrical, and Sustainability design duties at St Edburg’s Church of England Primary School in Bicester. The new building is situated within the Kingsmere mixed-use development site and enabled the relocation and expansion of the existing school. The school accommodates 450 pupils aged 3-11 in 14 classes and has been designed for open and interactive learning. Close consultation was undertaken with the Architect, Acanthus Clews to develop an advanced natural ventilation strategy utilising a central core and façade openings. The design, validated through dynamic modelling, also addressed high occupancy levels and challenging services distribution.

Science Laboratories, Lord Wandsworth College

QODA have been appointed as MEP, sustainability, and POE/Soft Landings consultants for the new Science Laboratories at the College. Sustainability and POE aspects of the project are essential to the school to ensure that the laboratories achieve the schools ambition for low-energy in use, as well as excellent internal environmental quality. Work includes building massing advice, façade optimisation, extensive thermal modelling, and climate-based daylight modelling of all spaces to ensure exemplary performance.

Case Study

Chenderit School, Middleton Cheney

QODA were appointed as M&E services designers for the new standalone teaching facility at Chenderit School. The new eight classroom accommodation split over two floors provides multifunctional teaching space to the school. The works included the demolition and removal of existing facilities including the modification and diversion of site infrastructure. To maximise useful floor area within the footprint, the MEP services design utilises spare capacity within the existing plant in an adjacent building, therefore minimising the size of new plantrooms. Detailed co-ordination using visualisations from 3D modelling tools were key to developing agreed servicing strategies which included, suspended acoustic rafts concealing localised ventilation and other room mounted services.

Case Study

IDRM, University of Oxford

QODA have been appointed as Passivhaus Consultants for the Institute of Developmental and Regenerative Medicine (IDRM) at the University of Oxford. This is a cutting edge research facility, aiming to promote multidisciplinary working and collaboration across three key areas; cardiology, neurology and immunology.  Working with McLaughlin and Harvey and SRA Architects, QODA are responsible for design and site duties for all aspects of Passivhaus design, including a particular focus on delivering class-leading airtightness. Project value: £23.5m.

Case Study

Existing Dormitory Refurbishment, ACS Cobham

Following the success of the new boarding block, QODA undertook the design for the second phase of the accommodation programme which involves the refurbishment of their existing dorm to house younger years of the school. The most challenging element of this project was maintaining occupation of the building whilst refurbishing and renewing all existing services. QODA were responsible for developing a services and refurbishment design which split the building into three phases.
