Role: Passivhaus Lead
Office: London
At QODA, we have a dedicated team of sustainability experts who work with design teams and industry leaders to provide design detail, guidance, and professional expertise. Over the next few weeks, we’ll be introducing each of our leads.
Next up is Lorenzo Patti. Read on to learn more about how he became a sustainability engineer, what his role at QODA involves, and a project that has inspired him.
What is your background?
I hold a degree in Building and Architectural Engineering from the University of Brescia in Italy. Throughout my academic studies, I gained a comprehensive understanding of various aspect of building design, from architectural to structural design and building physics.
As I transitioned into my professional career, I started working as an Energy and Sustainability Engineer.
“What motivates me in designing a diverse range of low-energy and sustainable buildings is the awareness that my contribution will help our industry move towards a net-zero future.”
What do you do at QODA?
In my role, as a certified Passivhaus Consultant and QODA’s Passivhaus Lead, I oversee a range of projects, including residential, commercial and higher education. I am involved throughout the entire project lifecycle, offering guidance and technical support from the early concept design to site delivery.
A crucial aspect of my role is to foster the dialogue and collaboration between engineering and architecture, with the aim of achieving a balance between energy efficiency, occupant comfort and carbon emission reduction.
Early engagement with clients and the design team is another a key aspect: through initial workshops and presentations, I assist in evaluating risks and opportunities and the impact of available design options during the development of the project.
I am also promoting the use of cutting-edge digital tools, complemented by advanced energy and building physics modelling software, which will play a significant role in optimising sustainable and low carbon design.
What is one project that has inspired you, and why?
The Convent Way Redevelopment, for Hounslow Council, has been a great source of inspiration for me.
“What truly resonates is the project’s commitment to creating a sustainable and vibrant community.”
Moreover, the integration of the Passivhaus Standard into the design of the 950+ homes will help to address the fuel poverty issue within the estate.
