QODA was appointed as MEP consultant for the major conservation and transformation of Knole House in Sevenoaks, one of England’s largest and most complete great houses. The project aimed to protect the historic fabric of this medieval estate while creating modern facilities that enhance public engagement and support long-term sustainability.
Project vision
The redevelopment focused on delivering new conservation studios, public engagement spaces, and the refurbishment of key visitor-facing areas, including stately showrooms, medieval barns, and haylofts. QODA’s role
QODA delivered a comprehensive feasibility study and full MEP design services, balancing complex conservation requirements with modern building standards. We undertook detailed investigations into the building fabric and service routes to ensure compliance with heritage constraints, and developed innovative, reversible interventions for heating, ventilation, electrical, and public health systems.
Our team also designed fire safety, access, and environmental control strategies for spaces never previously open to the public. Through careful phasing and close collaboration with the National Trust, we maintained business continuity and public access throughout the works.
Impact
The transformation of Knole House has created a world-class conservation and visitor hub, safeguarding one of England’s most significant heritage assets while delivering modern facilities for education, engagement, and cultural enrichment. QODA’s engineering expertise ensured that technical solutions were discreet, sustainable, and fully aligned with the project’s heritage objectives.
