Exeter Cathedral – Renewable Energy & Sustainability Review

Client: Exeter Cathedral
Services: MEP Design | Sustainability Consultancy | Renewable Technology Review

Overview

QODA was appointed to provide MEP design expertise and sustainability consultancy for Exeter Cathedral, one of the UK’s most significant heritage landmarks. The project focused on reviewing and implementing renewable energy technologies to support the Cathedral’s long-term carbon reduction strategy while preserving its historic character.

Project vision
The Cathedral sought to reduce its environmental impact and futureproof its energy systems without compromising the integrity of its Grade I-listed fabric. The challenge was to integrate modern, low-carbon solutions into a building of exceptional historic and cultural value.

Key features

Renewable Energy Assessment:

Comprehensive review of opportunities for low- and zero-carbon technologies.

MEP Design Input:

Ensured that proposed systems aligned with heritage constraints and operational needs.

Sustainability Strategy:

Recommendations to improve energy efficiency and reduce operational carbon emissions.

QODA’s role

QODA conducted a comprehensive technical review of renewable energy options for Exeter Cathedral, including heat pumps and solar technologies, to support the site’s long-term sustainability goals. We provided MEP design advice to integrate these systems sensitively within the Cathedral’s existing infrastructure, ensuring compatibility with its historic fabric.
Our strategic guidance helped shape a low-carbon approach that balances environmental performance with heritage preservation.

Impact

This project demonstrates how heritage buildings can embrace modern sustainability principles through sensitive engineering solutions. QODA’s work at Exeter Cathedral supports the transition to low-carbon operation, ensuring this historic landmark remains resilient for future generations.
