Overview
QODA is proud to be supporting the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, in delivering a pioneering low-carbon Learning Centre. Designed to achieve Passivhaus Plus and BREEAM Outstanding, the project will set a new benchmark for sustainable educational buildings in the UK.
The new Learning Centre will provide eight formal teaching spaces, comprising laboratories, early years and community learning spaces, a Seminar room, Gallery for changing exhibitions, offices, and sheltered outdoor areas – creating an inspiring environment for learners of all ages.
Project vision
Kew’s ambition is to create an exemplar building that aligns with its climate action goals, using natural materials wherever possible and minimising environmental impact. The design respects the sensitive heritage and ecological context by retaining the original building footprint to protect surrounding tree root systems.
Key features
Passivhaus plus standard:
Ultra-low energy demand, with heating loads projected at <10 W/m² based on early PHPP modelling.
Natural materials:
Likely to include cross-laminated timber (CLT), wood fibre insulation, and a green roof.
Sustainable systems:
- Demand-based, mixed-mode mechanical ventilation with natural cooling.
- Reversible heat pumps integrated into the main air handling system.
- Rainwater harvesting and PV solar arrays for renewable energy generation.
Thermal Performance:
Insulated raft foundation to reduce thermal bridging and maximise efficiency.
QODA’s role
Working closely with Hazle McCormack Young LLP and Pick Everard, QODA has provided Passivhaus consultancy and MEP design, ensuring the building meets its ambitious energy and comfort targets. Our team developed dynamic models to optimise the built form and achieve exceptional energy performance while maintaining occupant comfort and resilience to future climate conditions.
Impact
The new Learning Centre will be a flagship sustainable building, demonstrating how heritage sites can embrace innovative, low-carbon design without compromising on functionality or aesthetics. It will help Kew deliver on its climate commitments while providing a world-class educational experience.
