Client: University of Oxford
Services: Carbon Management | Heat Decarbonisation | Low Carbon Retrofit | Energy Modelling
Overview
QODA is supporting the University of Oxford in delivering its ambitious Carbon Management Programme, a strategic initiative to achieve significant and measurable carbon reductions across the University’s estate. This programme spans approximately 170 buildings and 600,000 m², many of which are heritage assets, requiring innovative and sensitive solutions.
Project vision
The University’s goal is to decarbonise its estate while preserving the historic character of its world-renowned buildings. QODA’s role as a framework consultant is to identify carbon reduction opportunities, develop actionable strategies, and manage the delivery of projects that align with the University’s sustainability objectives.
Key features
Whole-Estate Strategy:
Comprehensive review of energy performance and existing technologies across the functional estate.
Heat Decarbonisation Plans (HDPs):
- Detailed, costed strategies for seven high-profile buildings, including: Old Bodleian Library, Andrew Wiles Building, Examination Schools and Ashmolean Museum
- Integration of low-carbon technologies into Grade I and II listed buildings.
Low Carbon Heating Technologies:
- Recommendations for Air Source, Ground Source, and Water Source Heat Pumps.
- Proposals supported successful Salix Phase II funding applications.
Carbon Reduction Studies:
- Delivered for multiple buildings, including Said Business School and EPA Pathology Building.
- PHPP modelling used to predict energy and carbon savings.
QODA’s role
QODA played a key role in supporting the University of Oxford’s carbon reduction strategy by developing strategic interventions to lower emissions and improve building performance across its estate. We produced detailed Heat Decarbonisation Plans and carbon reduction studies for both heritage and modern buildings, helping to identify viable low-carbon solutions. Our work supported successful Salix funding applications for capital works, and we delivered energy modelling and retrofit strategies to futureproof assets while balancing performance with conservation requirements.
Impact
Through this programme, QODA has helped the University of Oxford map out clear, actionable pathways to decarbonisation, secure funding for major projects, and implement low-carbon retrofit solutions that balance performance with heritage value.
